What does the term INDIE
mean?
This definition from

The term indie is
short for "independent" and refers to artistic creations outside the
commercial mainstream, without the support of a major
record label ,
major movie studio
, or other source of a large budget. For example,
-
independent film
An independent film (or indie film) is a film produced
without the support of a major movie studio or a big budget. Creative,
business, and technological reasons have all contributed to the growth
of the indie film scene in the late 20th and early 21st century.
Creatively, it was becoming increasingly difficult
to get studio backing for experimental films. Experimental elements in
theme and style are inhibitors for the big studios.

indie rock
Indie rock, a subgenre of rock music, is often used to refer to
bands that are on small independent record labels or who aren't on
labels at all. In the 1980s, these bands were referred to as
"alternative", since they were alternative to mainstream rock at that
time. However, indie rock was effectively launched when Nirvana broke
into the mainstream along with several other bands, taking the
"alternative" label with them, ironically enough. "Indie rock" tends
to be an umbrella term covering a wide range of musical styles -
everyone from the Elephant 6 collective to the Pixies to the Cocteau
Twins; the main thing tying these bands together is their existence in
the underground. Some related genres include emo, lo-fi, retroist,
alternative rock, twee pop (sub pop) and Britpop.
